Award-winning filmmaker John Helde got his start with the New York documentary-makers Maysles Films. His background as a film editor with notable directors such as Alan Rudolph, Julia Sweeney and Chris Eyre informs his work as a director.
He has directed four short films, including POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT, VISIT, and HALIBUT HEADS, a five minute documentary made the Seattle International Film Festival’s ground-breaking Fly Film Challenge.
HELLO, an award-winning short starring Eric Stoltz, Susanna Thompson and Kevin Tighe and filmed on the Washington State Ferries, was the recipient of the competitive IFP Spotlight Award production grant. Repped by Big Film Shorts, HELLO screened at numerous major international film festivals, and is airing on HBO/Latin America as well as numerous VOD channels.
MADE IN CHINA, a feature documentary, premieres in 2007. The story of John’s search to understand his father’s lost childhood as an American growing up in China, the film is a recipient of grants from HUMANITIES WASHINGTON Documentary Pooled Fund, 4 Culture, and the Whitehead Family Foundation.
John has two feature film projects in development.
John directs films for non-profits (Kindering Center, International Community Health Services), corporations (Alaska Airlines), and ad agencies (WongDoody, egg).
